A growing demand for knowledge about European affairs in Western New York (WNY), but lack of a base for promoting teaching, research and public events related to Europe, has prompted this application for a Jean Monnet Chair at the University at Buffalo (UB). The Chair will coordinate existing activities and develop new ones in the area of European integration studies, with a particular focus on both intra-European mobility and immigration to Europe. This objective will be accomplished by the following activities:1. Developing new courses and enhancing interdisciplinary cooperation in teaching and research on Europe, using transatlantic perspectives;2. Conducting research on EU mobility and circulation through an ethnographic project on French migrants to London; 3. Disseminating knowledge on European integration to civil society in WNY and more broadly through events which stimulate reflection and public debate and through a website publishing “white papers” on contemporary issues of interest in transatlantic cooperation on mobility issues. The outcomes of these activities will be to: 1) deepen the quality of and interest in European studies at UB; 2) expand knowledge of European issues in the WNY region in civil society and at academic institutions; and 3) enhance the output and quality of research on European integration. The Chair will be affiliated with the Center for European Studies (CEUS) at UB. CEUS is devoted to research and intellectual exchange among faculty and students on the transformations of contemporary Europe as well as Europe's multiple historical traditions and close connections to North America. Activities of CEUS have included a conference on the Lisbon Treaty (2011); a conference on Circulation and European Identity (2015); and a monthly lecture series on European topics. CEUS has plans to apply for a Jean Monnet Center and to create an MA in European Studies.
