As all schools, St Joseph School, Blata l-Bajda faces challenges which it strives to overcome so as to keep the school a place where it will be possible for learners to get a holistic education and acquire the skills and academic achievements which will ultimately render them valuable assets to society in general. The School Development Plan document which outlines the school's priorities for the coming years gives a clear indication of the context in which the Senior Management Team and the staff will be working. Rather than changing what the school has been doing, that of providing a holistic education to its students, it now aims at consolidating what has already been done and is trying to improve it by keeping abreast with modern trends in education. The school administration has felt the need to embark on this project to direct Staff Development Training towards what is being suggested in the new National Curriculum Framework, and to strive to safeguard the ethos of the school which gives it its individuality. A group of seven participants will be taking part in this project. These participants have different roles within the school staff, ranging from members of the Senior Management Team, Teachers and Learning Support Assistants. The administration will be following a Human Resource Management Course. This course will enable the Senior Management Team to focus on its role as administrator in an educational background. A number of the teaching participants will be following training in the use of E-Learning in the Classroom thus helping them with the introduction of Interactive White Boards installed in the school. Besides, the primary school teachers are also envisaging the introduction of tablets to all their learners. Other teachers will be following training on Creativity within the Classroom, Inquiry Based Learning, Innovative Approaches to Teaching and Task Based Learning. Learning Support Assistants are interested in educating learners with special needs and others are also receiving training on E-Learning. The idea is to help Learning Support Assistants support the teacher within the classroom setup. All participants shall be following courses abroad provided by the ITC during the summer holidays so as not to disrupt the school setup. The outcome of this project will be evaluated through reports, presentations and school seminars. Parents will also be informed of the Project during parents' meetings and on the school website which is also accessible to the general public. The longer term benefits will be assessed by the School Management Team by monitoring the staff during lessons and encouraging them to implement what they have learned. Benefits could be reaped by both active participants and also by staff who did not take active part in the Project. Acquired competences will be shared during presentations of the participants which will be held during staff development meetings. The school also intends to disseminate acquired competences and knowledge to two other schools of St. Joseph and to all schools in Malta via in-service training which is held at the end of each scholastic year over a period of three days. This dissemination would help encourage other schools to use presented methodologies in their own classrooms and to acquire new skills and knowledge in the field of education. The school administration believes that training staff to meet new challenges in education is an investment to the individual, the school and most of all to the learners.
