Internationalisation and Sustainability

At SKF Technical College we have worked with internationalization for several years and on different levels. Among other things we have sent students to internship abroad, mainly countries within the EU. Since a few years we also have a project called Sustainable Future (SF) which involves all three grades for the students. Within this project the students will acquire knowledge about energy sources of today and for the future. They will also make a small wind turbine in our workshop as well as a projection of a wind turbine park with life cycle analysis. Now we would like to connect the two parts of internationalization and sustainability. As a part of that the staff will need to get further training and qualification in that area and be able to make new international contacts. We can see great advantages of this within the courses supported by Erasmus+. The idea is to send three teachers to different training courses to enforce the project SF. The project leaders, Therese Almgren and Mattias Bengtsson, will attend a conference about sustainability (International Seminar on Education for Sustainable Development: “ESD at the Crossroads”) and a course for education about sustainability (The Global Classroom 2015 – Educating for a more just and sustainable world). The English teacher will attend a refresher course for teachers of English at Larkhill Language Centre which include didactics and improved teaching methods using IT. There will also be great possibilities of making contacts with other English teachers from various countries to initiate a collaboration concerning sustainability. Prior to the different courses all three participants will attend meetings and prepare presentations about SF. They will also study local sustainability as well as how it is dealt with at SKF and in Sweden in general. Specific goals will be set up for each course and they will be reviewed by the principal and other staff upon the teachers’ return. This will hopefully lead to the progress and improvement of the project SF and new contacts with foreign countries will be made concerning sustainability. The participants will also be able to use their new knowledge in collaboration with internal staff at SKF, such as the manager for environmental issues at SKF, Ulf Andersson, who is involved in the project. As a result we expect our students to have thorough understanding and great knowledge about sustainability from an international perspective. We also believe this will make our program of industrial technology more appealing and attractive for young people, especially young girls. Our goal is to make sustainable living a natural part of their lives.
