PROJECT
FINISHED
The basic concept of the Bad Harzburg Kunstkarussell Association Project was cultural educational youth work. In cooperation with schools and kindergartens in the region, we taught our students with the main aim being that of personality development, in a variety of artistic skills. The main sphere of activity was in the area of non-formal education, incorporated within the schools timetable, as well as free courses and projects with various partners. A special focus was thereby placed on facilitating children and young people from disadvantaged families.
The main objective of the project was to implement an international component within this sphere of education. We wanted to show our students how enriching the acquaintance with people from other cultures can be. The promotion of tolerance and mutual respect is just as important as the development of an awareness of an overall European identity.
We wanted where possible to engage a man and a woman and then actually found two suitable candidates. Both enjoyed working with children and teenagers and because of their own artistic interests and abilities, were able to enrich the cultural education work of our organization. Both, in the field of the school AGs, as within several projects they set significant momentum. Their different personalities gave and made this an extra special attribute to our collaboration.
For the participants we envisaged a year full of vivid impressions, interesting challenges and incredible human encounters. As hosts, we tried to create the appropriate framework for this, and hope that we succeeded, at least partly. For us the Kunstkarussell it was the first project under the EFD, and we learned that we should not be too narrow minded with our expectations form ourselves or our guests. In our everyday life together, there were many extremely positive points, but also unexpected difficulties which had to be overcome. Not everything is predictable, therefore it is always important that one tries again and again to then complete the task with fresh courage and optimism. “If at first you don’t succeed, try again”
As the host organization, we had to ensure that our two volunteers received sufficient social care and support during their stay in Germany, such as associated seminars and language courses. Again, we can say that we have made valuable experiences for our future involvement with the EFD and have won important insights, in the administrative as well as in the socio-educational field. The greatest gain the volunteers can make from their time in Germany is when they are open minded, determined and willing to intensely use all that is offered from our side. As hosts we can only encourage the volunteers and try to create the necessary space that they need.
For our first year with the European voluntary services, we the Kunstkarussell found that mastering all the new challenges were extremely instructive and encouraging. Especially the intensive support provided by the National Agency "Youth for Europe" in all aspects of the administration and the practice gave us the security of knowing that wish to continue on this path and that our involvement with the EFD can be expanded. Since September 2015, we have three new volunteers to host, and the pleasing course of our current project only encourages us in this future endeavor.
