Under the theme “Crossing Borders, Transcending Conflict”, the International Session of the European Youth Parliament in Belfast/Dublin will bring together 330 young participants from 34 European countries, including local youth from Belfast. The theme highlights the historical background to the event, as well as the impact events like this can have on participants, including their direct and indirect environment.
During five working days in Belfast, the event will create a unique parliamentary simulation for the young delegates to work together, learn from each other, and experience parliamentary democracy first hand. It will offer them a unique experience to directly engage with decision-makers. The participants will divide into fifteen international working groups to discuss a current European topic and to draft a resolution by formulating their own ideas. They will also receive input and be in dialogue with experts and politicians during this process. Additionally, the International Session will include a series of cultural events promoting intercultural exchange and dialogue and celebrating Europe’s rich cultural diversity.
The conference in Belfast will be followed immediately by another conference in Dublin, which is not a formal part of this application. There the resolutions will be debated in a two-day General Assembly, according to the rules of the European Parliament. Additional cultural events will take place in Dublin.
By participating in IS Belfast/Dublin, the young participants will go through a non-formal as well as informal learning experience aimed at the promotion of European citizenship, active participation, democratic procedures and values and intercultural dialogue. Within the project, we wish to encourage young people to actively participate in discussions currently on the political agenda as well as to learn new skills through working in international multi-cultural teams on challenging political topics.
The event is an entirely youth driven project, organised by voluntary active young people aged between 18 and 26. EYPUK hosts the event and is supported by a steering group of close partners. A bigger group of sending partners select participants from 34 countries to Belfast.
