Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Oct 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The holder of the Organization for the Promotion of International Youth Encounters in Solingen, registered association - in short, Interju - was founded in 1994 following the arson attack in Solingen in May of 1993, in which five young Turkish women died and one young boy suffered third degree burns. The pursuit of the organization is that of promoting encounters between persons of diverse nationalities and cultures, and through these meetings, a development of mutual respect and tolerance for one another. The "Internationale Jugendbegegnungsstätte" (International Youth Meeting Center) was opened in 1995.. The spheres of activity are : open children's and youth activities, after-school homework help, media activities, special creative activities, international meets, language courses, parent-child groups, senior internet café and much more. The target groups are primarily the inhabitants of the district of Ohligs and its surroundings, with particular focus on the children, youth and their families, but there are also activities for the entire city and the surrounding area. Furthermore, we work together with various countries on international meet-ups, and particularly with our partner cities in France. Volunteers have access to all spheres of activity in our organization. He/she will become familiar with a wide spectrum of people of different age-groups and ethnicities within the organization itself as well as through contact with other organizations within and beyond the city bounds. Volunteers have the opportunity to acquire technical, pedagogical and general social and communicational skills through the different activities that he/she performs, partly in teamwork and partly independently, depending on his/her training and preparation. He/she plays a particular role amongst the entire staff. He/she performs general duties and carries out group work as well as his/her own separate duties. His/her own skills and knowledge, and certainly the cultural background of our volunteers determine his/her activities. The other staff members above all, profit on their part from these factors. Volunteers work with the organization to determine all activities. The center of focus lies on the children's sector and activities offered for children from ages 6 to 12. All activities are to be prepared, performed and evaluated with the coordinator of the children's sector as well as with the other staff members. Possible activities and work domains are: tending to the Senior internet café group, creative children's activities (handicraft, painting, poster design, newsletters, etc.), sports, music, dance, theater; audio, video and photo work and assistance during meeting activities with children and youth groups.
