Two young people from Germany will be sent through 'Kultur Aktiv' to Bosnia to volunteer for periods of 8 months and 12 months. The hosting organisation 'Omladinska Organizacija Svitac' is situated in the city of Brcko, within 'inter-ethnic district' with special status. The youth empowerment and conflict resolution organisation was established in 1998 and hosted already more than 250 international volunteers.
Within the project 'Interethnic dialogue in post-conflict society' the volunteers will organise and develop arts, music and drama workshops, classes, and activities alongside local staff and volunteers being visible in the community, promoting voluntary work and raising awareness of the opportunities of EVS in the local community. They will also help organise various events, festivals and music and arts camps in Brcko and the surrounding areas. Volunteers will be having a great deal of autonomy in planning and developing their workshops which helps them to build confidence, project management and leadership skills. Trough this tasks the young Germans will see the importance of civil initiatives within the society and it could encourage them to start or support other initiatives.
All of these activities aim to encourage and develop cooperation and communication between young people from Germany and Bosnia, while encouraging communication and dialogue at a local level between people from all backgrounds and ethnicities. While focusing on common projects rather than divisive issues the EVS volunteering project aims to emphasise and develop a sense of belonging to a wider European community, and at the same time explore complex issues surrounding conflict, national identity and nationalism.
