The project will develop an interactive simulation exercise for training in medical disaster/emergency management. Given that real life training in this field is difficult to organise, the computer-based simulation exercise will meets this training need both inexpensively and irrespective of constraints on time and place. Trainees from medical and paramedic backgrounds will receive guidance in how to manage stress, use their knowledge, make decisions and take responsibility in emergency disaster scenarios. Training will be able to be delivered individually or in teams and will be able to be undertaken at home, in VET centres and in the workplace. Based upon a needs analysis survey, project partners will identify the most appropriate disaster scenario for development into a simulation exercise. The contents of the simulation exercise will be sufficiently comprehensive to meet the training needs of the majority of disasters, but will also allow users to tailor the disaster scenario to meet their specific needs. By using a 'real time' scenario, trainees will be confronted with the consequences of any decisions they make in acting out a disaster. In developing the simulation outline and identifying appropriate software for its delivery, the project will explore existing disaster management and computer-based training. The simulation product will be integrated into the educational and training programmes of medical disaster management training. Trainers will be trained in the delivery of the simulation exercise which will be piloted with potential users who will, along with project partners, validate the software and training outcomes. The end product will be launched via the project's web platform and will be accompanied by a user manual. A version will also be produced on CD-Rom for demonstration purposes.
