Integrating CALL in Early Education Environments
Start date: Oct 1, 2010,

ICE3 aims at promoting computer assisted language learning (CALL) at school level, in a way that is based on a pedagogically sound orientation (based on the communicative teaching language principles) and that integrates advanced processing tools for the generation of immediate feedback. The consortium wishes to extend their previous work on the area to overcome clearly identified shortcomings of present use of ICT in language learning classes:- the lack of evaluation of CALL based activities in real school contexts,- the lack of comprehensive approaches to CALL evaluation that jointly considers the perspectives of developers, teachers and learners,- the simplicity of most CALL applications, which do not exploit the real possibilities ICT offers in the education context, and which do not offer solutions to the teachers and learners needs,- the fact that teachers are not involved in the material creation process, which results in its inadequacy for most real learning situations,- the fact that learners usually depend on their teachers to get feedback on their written productions, which undermines their autonomy. The project outcomes will be a methodology of integrating intelligent ICT into language learning courses, a set of materials for language learning based on that methodology, tools to provide automated feedback both on grammar and content and style in the students' answers to the writing exercises, a community of teachers trained in the methodology and the underlying tools, and a set of good practices related to the introduction and use of ICT in language learning classes. The tools will be available in English, German and Spanish; additionally a method and a clear cost estimation will be provided to facilitate the production of these tools in other languages.
