INTERSYC is an integrated set of activities, aiming at improving the quality of life of the children in the regions of implementation through the development of three axes of intervention:1. The first axis includes actions that focus on the direct remedy of critical problems of children at risk (missing children, children victims of trafficking, etc). Key factors of this axis are the seminars for staff training, the transfer of knowledge and the promotion to the Bulgarian side of the existing European tools, such as the European Line for Missing Children 116000, the European Platform for the Coordination of Children Missing Alarm: (a) ECAAS (European Child Alert Automated System) and (b) Amber Alert.2. The second axis includes actions, which aim at improvement of health services for children in the intervention area through the development of comprehensive programs of preventive medicine for children living in the cross border region of Greece-Bulgaria.3. The third axis aims at improvement of social care services provided to children. Social workers are educated to provide emergency and first aid rescue services. Civil Support Centers for children and families in need are facilitated in the provision of their services. Achievements: • Preventive medicine actions: 3.616 children were examined (2.022 children in Greece & 1.594 children in Bulgaria) and 13.914 preventive pediatric, dental, ophthalmological and otorhinolaryngological medical examinations were conducted (7.579 check-ups in Greece & 6.335 check-ups in Bulgaria).• Areas of intervention: The Mobile Units of Preventive Medicine for Children of The Smile of the Child and in particular the Mobile Ophthalmology Unit and the Mobile Polyclinic IPPOKRATIS, which includes independent audiology, cardiology, pediatric, ophthamology and dentistry departments operated in Greece in the following areas: Eleftheroupoli (Kavala), Nikissiani, Nea Peramos, Melissokomio, Podochori, Ofrinio, Kavala, Krinides and Nea Karvali. The aforementioned Mobile Units staffed with personnel from The Smile of the Child and with the support of the Bulgarian doctors conducted similar preventive medicine actions in Bulgaria and more specifically in the regions of Sandanski and Kardzhali.• 270 basic life support training seminars: 168 people were trained in Greece and 102 people in Bulgaria. Those seminars included Basic Life Support (BLS) training and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) usage.• Development of Civil Support Centers for children and their families.• Purchase of additional equipment and vehicles to support the medical and social activities.Testimonials• The INTERSYC project proved to be an indispensable tool in covering the needs of vulnerable children in Greece and Bulgaria – Mr. Kostantinos Giannopoulos, Chairman of the BoD, The Smile of the Child.• The INTERSYC project demonstrated both the opportunity for excellent partnership between partners from the nongovernmental and the public sector and implemented successfully the most valuable – childrens healthcare – nations future potential – Dr. Jeni Staykova, Project Manager, Regional Health Inspectorate, Kardjali.• What makes INTERSYC really important is its focus on solving crucial social problems related to improving childrens health, preventing child trafficking, including of children and adults with intellectual disabilities – Ms. Lidiya Pankova, President, Chance non-profit association for persons with intellectual disabilities.• Prevention is the best cure. INTERSYC project secures the health and safety of children, being the most vulnerable social group – Ms. Anastasia Iosifidou, President of the Board, Public Benefit Organisation of Kavala City – Dimofelia.• The training seminars on first aid techniques were extremely useful. We had an excellent cooperation and communication within the partnership. For the execution of these actions common strategies were developed between key stakeholders.Identification of main features of good practicesContributing the healthy environment.DistinctionGreek shadow puppet figure Karagiozis, along with other fictional characters distinguished by speech, behavior and dress code, was the protagonist of the shadow puppet theatrical performance created to present the achievements of the INTERSYC project at the Interreg 25 years Project Slam contest (Luxembourg, 15-16 September 2015). INTERSYC was one of the one hundred and eight projects (108) that ran under the ETCP Greece-Bulgaria 2007-2013, one of the five (5) pre-selected projects participating in the Slam and the winner of the contest.
