Insight for VET teachers into the management and operation of the tourism industry
More flexible VET systems that can offer up-to-date industry-specific competences is a crucial factor in fighting unemployment and raising competitiveness. However, as our prior needs analysis underpins, especially in tourism VET teachers often lack the insight and experience in the industry and their background is often in other disciplines. We plan to transfer a methodology that contributes to bridging the gap between VET and enterprises. During a well-prepared short placement VET teachers will have the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of workflows, guest expectations, and market relations. Our target sector is tourism. This is one of the most important economic sectors in Hungary, contributing 10% to the GDP. Being a labour intensive service, it has a high share in VET (in 2010/11 15% of all students in VET). Upon elaborating and testing in the tourism industry, the methodology can be applied in other industries, as well. The main aims and objectives are the following: 1) to enable secondary VET teachers to gain insight into the management and operations of a tourism enterprise; 2) to empower participating VET teachers to develop and share attractive and up-to-date learning materials based on their practical industry placement experience; 3) to ensure the sustainability and valorization of the new scheme, 4) to help policy makers developing an appropriate legal and administrative VET framework. The consortium includes all stakeholders of tourism VET education. Both the transferor and the transferee side of the consortium include organizations with expertise both in VET education and in the for-profit tourism sector. All partners have substantial project experience and also all of them have been involved in international projects previously. The diverse background of the partners ensure that extensive networks of both VET and tourism organizations and experts can be mobilized and utilized throughout the project. This will enable the consortium to integrate and adapt the placement and communication schemes and also to effectively valorize it. The main outcome is the integrated, adapted and extended placement methodology. In order to ensure usability and impact we will add further components, as guides for all stakeholders and case study methodology to empower teachers to incorporate their experiences in everyday teaching. Beside the main results a series of dissemination and valorization results (e.g. a knowledges sharing portal and an organisation to run the scheme in the long term) will be produced. Short-term impacts • adaptation of the teacher industry placement scheme to the Hungarian tourism VET sector• raising awareness of the importance of VET-industry relationships• availability of up-to-date case studies for teaching. Long-term impacts • tourism VET programs become increasingly up-to-date, practical, industry-specific and attractive• development of a network of VET teachers• transferability to other
