Innov@te is to both develop and pilot a multi-level international training programme in Surface Engineering. The planned programme being a complete modular system of self (& tutored) instruction centred primarily upon internet delivery.The prototype system will introduce new methodology for the cross-border delivery of open and distance education and training programmes, to meet the needs of a wide range of individuals in a growing interdisciplinary field.Led by the UK Institute of Materials (IOM), the project aims to bring together groups of both 'teachers' and 'learners' to trial a system of flexible and effective knowledge transfer based upon advanced open & distance learning (ODL) methodology and the e-learning environment.Through the use of training units it will be possible to 'select' and 'individually package' training modules according to individual or group user requirements. Materials will be output in a number of European languages (DE, FR, RO, HU, EN & SV) and will be primarily available in (and emphasising the use of) electronic format, however, where need dictates other formats will exist to include traditional printed product. Electronic training materials will be user-responsive, encouraging user feedback on issues such as style and content.Europe-wide accreditation will be sought across the partnership and international recognition sought through a project-dedicated website. Marketing and awareness raising is further planned throughout existing ODL and sector specific networks.
