FINISHED
The project Initiative for Good is planning to send five Bulgarian volunteers - three short-term and two long-term young people to work in social institutions in Poland, Germany, France and Portugal and will host five volunteers from France, Spain and Portugal in Varna, Bulgaria. A main focus in the work of the volunteers will be the sustainable development of voluntary work in social care, started and maintained by the BalkanKids Foundation for the last five years. The volunteers in Varna will work in the following centres: Varna Orphanage, centres for foster care, daily centre for mentally impaired youngsters, a school for blind children and an art centre for blind elderly people. The BalkanKids Foundation created an art studio for workshops with the orphans in the local orphanage and the volunteers of our current project perform activities in the children's free time: art, Spanish and English workshops, culinary ideas - this work has to be continued by the new volunteers. The same is true for our engagement with the other social institutions. The work of the volunteers introduces new trends and inter-cultural depth to the life of the children, develops their social skills and improves their self-confidence and optimism for daily life. The aim of this project is also to join the efforts of other NGOs in the city in the preparation of Varna as a European Youth Capital 2017, for example facilitating the Varna climbing club in the building and safety work around the climbing wall for free climbing in the Sea park and the youth voluntary group The Dolphins. The volunteers will be engaged in the promotion of the Erasmus + program, the non-formal education and YouthPass. The project methodology will be in the sphere of non-formal education - art and culinary workshops, presentations, games, small groups, etc. The long term benefits are: development of the communicative and social skills of the disadvantaged youngsters, and the system of social care, sustainability in the partnerships, and the involvement of Bulgarian volunteers in them, promotion of the Erasmus + EVS program, development of the BalkanKids capacity as a sending partner among the young people of Varna, especially those with disadvantage, and the preparation of Varna as a European Youth Capital in 2017.
