The background to our project called "individual furthering of pupils' talents in a cultural comparison"; can be found in our schools' qualification for a program called "SHIB" that funds schools that give special attention to all pupils' individual talents, not only the particularly or highly gifted ones. To us as staff it seems to be the consequent continuation of the recently terminated funding of the existing SHIB project to go beyond German borders and examine the same aspects within European borders. How do other European countries deal with the supportive development of students' talents in everyday classes? How can we proft from each others' knowlegde and experiences?
We are in the middle of establishing our school as a so called "Kulturgymnasium" which is the equivalent to a grammar school with cultural focus. Thus, it is our aim to enrich the regular curriculum with special cultural activities beyond the rural area in which we are located. Since our German culture has to be seen in an overall European context it goes without saying that we need to teach our pupils the competence of interculturalism beyond the German context.
It is of interest to every individual in our school community to compare methods and achievements with other European countries, to grow and to develop within international borders. At this point of time there are eleven members of staff who are supposed to actively participate in the ERASMUS + program to foster our project. After their return they are expexted to serve as multipliers among all staff members in order to make the project even more successful.
Planned activities vary from historical, economical to political courses and extend to cover the artistic- esthetic and sportive areas of talent furthering. The linguistic aspects in modern as well as in traditional languages such as Latin are notwithstandingly included.
The procedure of the project will be clearer after the collegues' return from the program since some aspects can only be considered afterwards. At this point our schools' way of dealing with the furthering of pupils' talents can be found in our offical school program on our website. Its consequent continuation on an international level is the basic idea of this application.
It is our explicit aim as a school in a rather rural area on the plains to see, to acknowledge and to foster gifts and talents of pupils as well as to widen cultural horizons. Offering cultural activities and establishing cultural competence is supposed to build a positive school atmosphere of mutual appreciation which again serves as a rolemodel for all individuals in our school community.
