IMPROVING HEALTH AND SAFETY OF FREIGHT TRANSPORT DRIVERS

Transport sector is one of the most important sectors in Europe. It provides about 4.5 million jobs and generates a turnover worth about 1.6 % of EU gross domestic product. However, transport sector is unfavorable in almost all potential risk dimensions, compared with the average of all other sectors. Thus, the sector is at risk in terms of ambient conditions (noise, vapours, danger, vibrations, high/low temperatures, radiation), ergonomic conditions, working non‐standard hours and long working hours, as well as organisational risks such as heavy job demands, lack of control and inability to develop one’s skills at work.Considering this context, SAFE Truck Project aims at the development of Web 2.0 learning environment that will help road freight transport drivers to increase their knowledge on health and safety at work, in order to make them aware of the risks that may derive from their daily activities. Thus, SAFE Truck learning environment contains specific information and training on Health and Safety and Risks Prevention for road freight transport drivers. This information and training consists in text documents and short training films that could be easily downloaded by the users in order to have access to them in PDA (text documents) and in MP4 players (short training films). As a result, SAFE Truck project combines e‐learning (Web 2.0) and mobile learning (PDA and MP4) providing a flexible training for freight transport drivers.Furthermore, the Web 2.0 learning environment allows the direct involvement of the target group as they will have the opportunity to collaborate in the training process by adding any information and/or reference materials they consider interesting. The SAFE TRUCK consortium was composed by organisations of different nature such as: a transport trade unions; a consultancy firm specialised in social and market research and in the execution of national and European projects; a freight transport association; a transport higher education institution; a consultancy firm specialised in the development of innovative learning tools; a company specialised in the production of multimedia materials; a transport training association; a trade union of driving schools, and a transport training company. All these organisations worked together for the successful development of the project and its main results, which is: a Report on the situation of Road Freight Transport Sector with regards to Health and Safety and a Web 2.0 learning environment (EN, ES, BG,DE, HU, PL, SK).As a result, SAFE Truck expects to contribute raising awareness on the causes of accidents for freight transport drivers, to help them to assess and react appropriately in emergency situation, to provide them with information of health and safety legislation, and to aware them of unsafe acts and conditions that may cause risks.
