Background
Throughout the Polish media and in political debates, the dominant opinion expressed is that the national economy should be based on the use of the countryâs coal resources. Advocates for coal claim that it remains the most abundant and the cheapest source of energy in Poland. As a result, topics such as climate change, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions or implementing renewable energy are usually neglected or perceived as highly controversial. Opinions and views that point out social and environmental benefits of renewables or energy efficiency are barely noticeable in the public debate.
According to a recent public opinion poll, only 39% of Poles consider climate change as an important negative phenomenon, so the need for a climate policy and the development of renewable energy sources is often questioned. It is therefore important to stimulate public debate about the current energy generation model, and raise awareness of the need for a more balanced view of energy and climate change policies.
Objectives
The LIFE_WZROST_PL project is an information campaign promoting the idea of a sensible policy for climate change and sustainable development. It aims at raising the general public awareness in Poland about the necessity of actions (at national, EU and global level) in fields such as climate change, alternative growth paths, renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and sustainable consumption.
The project also aims to support the development of existing platforms of cooperation between interested parties, to exchange information on climate change, to support a more effective compliance and implementation of EU climate legislation through the dissemination of best practices, and increase engagement of stakeholders (including non-governmental organisations) in consultations and the implementation of climate policy.
Expected results:
The main expected result will be a full-length documentary film entitled âRevolution Nowâ, composed of ten short autonomous episodes (5 mins each) devoted to selected aspects of sustainable development and climate policy. The film will be shown to various audiences, through TV channels (mostly Discovery channels), film festivals, a roadshow tour, YouTube and other social media.
Other expected results include:
Increased public awareness about climate change, sustainable development and relevant EU policy, through a targeted 7 million people viewing the film âRevolution Nowâ;
Reaching up to 2. 5 million people through the internet, via bloggersâ posts about the filmâs premiere (at least 900 000 viewings) and information about the projectâs campaign on blogs and vlogs (1.35 million viewings), while posts on WWFâs facebook page will reach 100 000 users and information about the project will reach WWFâs 200 000 newsletter subscribers;
Reaching up to 15 million contacts (counted on the basis of media monitoring reports), resulting from the media coverage during the projectâs lifetime (including at least 50 mentions about the film in the media (press, TV, radio, Internet);
The project will ensure that 2 300 people become familiar with the subject matter and are able to exchange views during the film roadshow, with the campaignâs effectiveness assessed on the basis of 220 surveys conducted after viewing the documentary;
The project website will act as a focus for exchanging information about successful solutions and actions related to climate protection, and be a contact point for interested parties; and
The film script will be a compilation of knowledge on climate change in the global and national context, covering the most important themes for the Polish audience. It will also include guidelines for politicians and the public on how to reach compliance with EU climate legislation.These actions will motivate the engagement of stakeholders in the consultation and implementation of climate policy, showing that Poland is economically capable of sustainable development and ambitious climate action. Moreover, the project will show that the countryâs economic potential lies within the clean energy, clean technology and energy-efficiency sectors, as they represent a better and more cost-effective long-term development alternative than continuing dependence on fossil fuels, which cause harm to the environment and people.
