ILONA, ”Joy Empowering Voluntary Work ” is a staff and student mobility project coordinated by Salpaus Further Education (Lahti Region Educational Consortium), with domestic partners Helsinki Diakonia College, Ylivieska Vocational College (Federation of Education in Jokilaaksot), South Ostrobothnia Folk High School, Lapland Vocational College (Rovaniemi Municipal Federation of Education) and Lappia Vocational College (Kemi-Tornionlaakso Municipal Education and Training Consortium Lappia), together forming the Sanare network. The project will be carried out in cooperation with our foreign partners (Denmark, the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Spain). In choosing partners we have taken versatility into account : there will be on-the-job training places for both practical nursing students and youth and leisure instructor students. In addition, our foreign partners have experience of our project theme, voluntary work. The on-the-job training places are day care centres, schools, elderly people’s homes and service centres for disabled people. In the ILONA project, there will be altogether 40 students of both the social and health care field (practical nursing) and students of humanities and education (youth and leisure instructors) participating in mobility periods. In addition, students taking a vocational qualification or specialist qualification (for example a specialist qualification within the care of the elderly) have a possibility to take part, as well.
The goal of the ILONA project is to support the maturing of students into active citizens who possess know-how of intercultural and social sustainable development for future working life. Participating in the mobility project enables the evolvement of knowledge into awareness and recognition through experience-based learning and this way into a willingness to develop the students’ own professionalism in the future.
The Sanare network has carried out a Leonardo project before; the experiences of this project will be utilized in the ILONA project. We will carry out a weekend orientation course for the participants, where they will receive information about the destination countries, the concept of voluntary work, the English language and the technology to be used (tablets, mobile phones and their applications).
The concrete result of the project will be, besides the mobility periods, blogs written by the students as well as audiovisual presentations in which the voluntary work as carried out in the destination countries is described. In their presentations the students can use for example photos, videos, music, web pages etc. As the tools they can use for example cameras, computers, tablets and smartphones. With the help of social media the results of the project can be distributed widely both domestically and abroad. The presentations can be used as workplace introductions, learning materials and as preparatory material for the next project. The purpose is to give the presentations to the use of the international partners, for example as introductions to services and voluntary work, the recruitment of volunteers, advertising and so on.
The activities in the project will be planned and prepared in the autumn of 2015, and the first weekend orientation course for the students going on a mobility period in the spring of 2016 will also be arranged at that time. Another weekend orientation course will be arranged in the autumn of 2016. To document the mobility periods we will use the Europass. The mobility periods will be carried out between the spring of 2016 and the spring of 2017. The project will end with a final evaluation and final report in the spring of 2017.
