The European citizenship awareness is being mentioned as the common solution to the social problems which increasing rasicm and xenofobia have brought just after the European economic crisis. We carried out our project to make young people understand better the meaning of depending on each other and fighting with the common problems with the European citizenship awareness beyond just voting on the elections. As Turkey Europe Foundation, we carried out our project to define the concept of living together on the identity of European Citizenship.
The participants, who has basic either no knowledge about European Citizenship and Youth Participation and want to improve their skills and the leaders who supported those participants, were informed about European Citizenship topic with the methods such workshops, role-plays, simulation games and various activities to meet with the needs of the participants in higher level. In addition to that,during the project we informed participants about Erasmus+ Youth Program and increase the visibility of Erasmus+ Program. Furthermore, the participants worked on their own project to present their own ideas to Erasmus+ Programme.
Our project called I am a European Citizen took place between 10-18 August 2015 in Istanbul with the participating countries ( Turkey, Greece, Portugal,France,Sweden, Spain, Italy and Romania ) with 32 participants and 8 leaders. During our project, we reached the objectives such promoted the meaning and the concept of European Citizenship and how its related to youth work and experiecned the European Citizenship and discover its' potentials for active democratic change in the society and provide information about current status of European Citizenship ( concepts, offical status and expressions) and ensure the understanding of the importance of European Citizenship in a crisis in Europe with participants.
The methodology that is used during the project involves non-formal learning methods such as, Simulation Games, Role Plays, Visual studies, Group Works, Visual presentations. As the results of our project, the participants developed their knowledge and skills and get experienced in the topics of European citizenship, youth involvement, Erasmus+ Youth Programme, and they shared their experiences with the participating institutions and organizations. In this way, the participants will have a positive influence on the participation to Erasmus+ Programme. Also the following are expected as the long term effects:
- The increase of European Citizenship Recognition and Awareness among the youth.
- The increase of social visibility of European Citizenship and Youth Attendance through the activities which are organised by the attending organisations, and also the increase of such activities.
