Hygiene and Animal Welfare: The European Vision

The Module will address hygiene and animal welfare from an international and multidisciplinary perspective, as professors of various disciplines from Germany, the Netherlands, Estonia and Mexico present their views on the matter. Participants in the Module will benefit from the accumulated knowledge about hygiene and animal welfare coming from Europe. Each year a European renowned researcher will impart lectures, seminars and workshops on hygiene and animal welfare at the Autonomous Metropolitan University and will tutor young students.The core of the Module will be an introductory course by a European professor enriched with the participation of Mexican professors and Mexican government officials, where participants will get a close view of European standards and relevant information on the postgraduate studies scene in the Continent, so that they can make informed choices in the selection of mobility programs.The Module will extend for three years, and will cover the following areas:• Overview of European legislation on animal welfare and the corresponding practices • The importance of teaching animal health and welfare from a European perspective• Applications of animal hygiene standards to dairy animals (cows, goats, ewes) transport, stunning and slaughter, and other species.The aim of the academic activities will be to promote a scientific approach to teaching and research in the area of animal health.At the end of the third year, the Module will be evaluated so that the UAM may opt for the establishment of the Jean Monnet Chair on Hygiene and Animal Welfare: The European Vision.
