Context/background: Hogeschool Utrecht/HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht is a higher education institution with among 36.500 students and 3.500 staff members divided over 6 faculties and located in 2 cities Utrecht and Amersfoort. Within HU, the staff service Education and Research, is responsible for strategic policy development in the field of internationalization, education, research, diversity and quality assurance.
The International Office (IO) facilitates HU in the process of internationalization and in the implementation of HU international education. The IO supports the students and staff members in exchange for study, traineeship, teaching assignments and staff training abroad. IO maintains contacts with 200 foreign institutions for higher education. Students and staff members can contact the IO by email, phone or coming to the front desk. The faculties are responsible for the study programmes and play a role in the selection of students and staff members who want to go abroad. Internet and intranet (Ask HU) play an important role in the provision of information.
Objectives: Our bachelor’s programmes all provide in a ‘profiling space’ of 30 EC's which students can fill in freely – taking into account conditions to level and content. This space can be used for a study programme or a traineeship abroad. Possibilities for traineeships abroad differ per study programme, depending on requirements. Characteristic of our study programmes is that all students need to do traineeships as part of their study, which results in a relatively high number of traineeships abroad.
Study abroad/exchange:
Goal is for students to study abroad at a higher education institution at an European country. It aims to provide students with the opportunity of studying in another country, to promote cooperation between education institutions and help to enrich their educational environment and to contribute to building well-qualified open minded and internationally experienced young professionals.
- In the academic year 13-14 283 students received an Erasmus+ grant, in 14-15 285 students and in 15-16 329 students (estimated). The number of applicants increases every year. Because of a shortage in our Erasmus+ budget for 2015 we have transferred 15-16 students to this project.
- Most popular country/destination in Europe for HU students to do their study abroad period is: Spain, followed by Finland and Germany.
- The average duration of student exchanges is 4.5 months.
- Students of business and communication made the biggest share of those on exchanges. This can be explained by the fact that going abroad is a mandatory part of their study programme.
Traineeships:
The goal by temporarily working in a organization for students is to gain a better understanding of other work environments and cultures as well as the chance to develop specific skills and adapt to the requirements of the labor market. Besides that it also boosts cooperation between higher education institutions and organizations.
- In academic year 13-14 in the previous Erasmus programme 131 students received an Erasmus grant, in academic year 14-15 166 students received an Erasmus+ grant and in 15-16 169 students. The number of applicants increases every year and since 01-06-2014 more students have the opportunity to apply for an Erasmus+ grant since the minimum duration changed from 3 to 2 months.
- Top 3 destinations were: United Kingdom and Spain on top, followed by Germany.
- The average duration of traineeships is 4 months.
- As we are a University of Applied Sciences traineeships are incorporated in every study programme.
Staff mobility aims to enrich the experience of participating staff, to contribute to the internationalization and modernization of higher education through cooperation between higher education institutions and staff and to encourage student mobility. The share of teaching assignments at HU is larger than the share of staff training.
- In the academic year 13-14 48 teachers received an Erasmus+ grant, in 14-15 50 teachers and in 15-16 we expect 65 teachers are doing a teaching assignment. The number of applicants increases slightly every year.
- Most popular destinations for staff on teaching assignments are: Denmark and Belgium on top, followed by Finland.
- The average duration of teaching assignments is slightly more than 4 days.
- Teachers of the faculty of economics and management and the institute for social work spent the highest number of periods abroad on teaching assignments because staff mobility/exchange is higher on their agenda's.
Staff training aims to allow both administrative and academic staff to participate in different forms of training abroad, such as job shadowing or attending job-related workshops and training sessions.
- In the academic year 13-14 21 staff members received an Erasmus+ grant for training activities, in 14-15 8 staff members and in 15-16 12 (estimated).
