Under the impact of major economic and demographic changes, many countries seek to internationalize the training of their students to meet the needs of an increasingly globalized market. At the same time, a growing number of Southern countries subsidize their students’ mobility to be trained in key sectors for their economic development strategy.
So far considered as a source of openness and exchanges, the internationalization of higher education has become an imperative for the economic development of a country and a competitive advantage for educational institutions. Traditionally seen as a means of strengthening the international influence and scientific excellence of the countries concerned, the reception of international students is also considered as a challenge to raise the level of labor qualification.
So, many actors of higher education converge towards internationalization: students wish to get their training in another country, offered in another language to enhance their curriculum; teachers are eager and to share their knowledge with different publics, their expertise and know-how to international students. They are also keen to exchange with their international counterparts. Partner universities in turn wish to develop their education, their research, their fields of excellence, host and train students and international colleagues and send their students or staff training abroad.
University du Maine (UM) is experiencing a constant growth rate of students and staff in international mobility, especially as far as student internships are concerned. Student mobility is mandatory or strongly recommended as part of the student's curriculum and the wish of UM is to financially support a maximum of students to enable them to validate part of their curriculum in international training. To do so, UM is based on four financial assistance schemes: + ERASMUS, ENVOLEO (regional system of Pays de La Loire) ADDITIONAL MOBILITY (supported by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research to offer scholarship to students on social criteria) and MOBILITY AID (co-financing arrangements between the Sarthe local authority, Le Mans Métropole and UM) ; this enables each student to get a minimum of € 225 per month as part of an international mobility.
It is in this context that UM applied in ERASMUS + under the action of higher education mobility. University du Maine received a grant covering student, and teaching and administrative staff mobility.
The grant agreement ERASMUS + 2014 granted to University of Maine covers mobilities conducted over the period from January 6 2014 to September 30 2015 and it allowed to accompany 74 students as part of their Studies’ mobility (SMS), 73 students as part of internship mobility (SMP), 6 teaching staff as part of an educational mobility (STA) and 1 administrative staff of the International Office as part of mobility training (STT).
