Since its foundation in 1998, the University of Insubria is committed to the management and development of student and staff mobility thanks to the accreditation of the European Commission first within the Socrates program, through LLP and now, with the grant of the ECHE, under Erasmus +.
Furthermore, the Institution promotes its international dimension by means of additional mobility programs for both students and teaching and administrative staff, master degree programs taught totally or partially in English, double degree programs; the University engages its human and financial resources with the goal of making the culture of internationalization as widespread as possible.
The numbers of mobility are constantly increasing. In particular, compared with the previous year, during 2014/15, the number of mobile students increased by 22% and mobile staff by 98%. Even if to a lesser extent, the number of incoming students and staff from partner institutions has risen as well. The establishment of double degree programs and a wider interest in traineeship experiences has particularly favored the increase of second cycle mobile students. The governance of the University has also paid significant attention to the mobility of staff for training purposes and has, to this end, deployed specific funds to encourage a wide participation.
Such positive results derive from the promotion of Erasmus on occasions such as the Open Days and the Welcome Week for newly enrolled students organized by the staff of the Orientation Office as well as guidance meetings on opportunities for international mobility and the first International Staff Training Week organized by the International Relations Office . As for incoming students, the tutoring service has grown and specific places in the student dormitory have been reserved. The University is also particularly focused on issues related to the linguistic preparation of mobile students, in fact, both for outgoing and incoming students, the opportunity to take part in foreign languages courses or Italian language has been offered for free.
Besides positive results from a quantitative point of view , for 2014/15, an improvement in quality has been achieved as well. In fact, during the last academic year, we had the first 7 graduates within a double degree program, 3 of them are from the University of Insubria and 4 from the Friedrich Schiller Universität Jena; in general, the ratio of planned credits, achieved credits and recognized ones is constantly improving. Moreover, the number of mobile students who have not achieved the recognition of credits has become an increasingly rare phenomenon. Having invested in staff training has spread the culture of internationalization in professional fields traditionally not involved in this process and, thanks to the new contacts made, new ways of working have been learned. The teaching staff mobility has been used for teaching activities and, besides, it served in many cases to plan new mobility opportunities also outside Europe, that will provide a solid foundation to respond, in 2016, to the call for the Erasmus + International Credit Mobility with a better structured application and a more solid background.
