Located in the heart of Europe, the University of Erfurt considers itself a place of international encounters and communication between diverse cultures. Its international profile is reflected in the composition of the student body, among other things. 450 out of approx. 5000 students come from abroad. The university maintains a variety of cooperative ties to higher education institutions in Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. Members of all schools participate in international research networks and foster an intensive international exchange.
The University of Erfurt has joined the Erasmus programme already in its second year after starting to teach (2000). Since then it signed about 70 bilateral agreements with European partner institutions. Almost all study programmes offer exchange opportunities. Principles of selection, counselling and support of outgoing and incoming students were established. Information sessions and websites inform the outgoing students about their exchange opportunities. Students receive assistance in completing their applications at the partner institutions. The Departmental Coordinators advice on the selection and recognition of courses. In addition, the university offers preparatory sessions and a list of recommended literature for the preparation of the study abroad period.
In terms of Erasmus+ internships the University of Erfurt is a member of the Thuringian Consortium for Erasmus internships. Therefore it did not apply for funding of Erasmus internships.
Incoming students can benefit from an easy application process, from a Comprehensive Language and Orientation Course for new exchange students, additional German language courses throughout the semester and a tutoring programme organised by German students. Departmental coordinators provide assistance in academic questions. The socio-cultural support programme consists of dormitory placements provided by the Studentenwerk, the host family programme “Strangers become friends”, the cooperation with Erfurt schools, the joint language programme “Tandem”, the International Café, excursions and intercultural events.
Teaching staff mobility is considered a useful add-on to student exchange, so that students who cannot go an exchange gain an international experience as well (Internationalisation at Home). The University of Erfurt aims not only to develop the academic dialogue among the teaching staff but also to integrate visiting staff into the teaching body during the stay at the University of Erfurt.
Within the 2014-2016 Erasmus contract 69 student mobilities, 7 teaching staff mobilities and one staff training mobility have been successfully carried out. This correlates exactly with the updated financial contract after the interim report.
