Schools-partners teach children with special needs in common classes, in special classes, but in the same building or in separate schools and see the need to improve the integration of children with special needs into the schools community and society, to strengthen tolerance for their differences, to improve the support and educational support system and to create such circumstances at school that could make their learning achievements higher. One idea to help school communities to reach these goals was to create the system of voluntary help, where pupils can help each other in learning and some teachers-volunteers and educational support specialists (special pedagogues, psychologists, speech therapists) can help them, too. Project objectives: to implement the model of voluntary educational help at schools and to improve an integration of children with special needs into the schools’ community. Methodology to be used: peer support and voluntary help models. Participants: teachers and pupils volunteers, educational support specialists and special-needs children (about 15-20 volunteers and 30 children with special needs from each region). Activities: - analysis of the needs for social, psychological and educational support of children with special needs, their parents and of the educational needs of volunteers - making recommendations for volunteers’ work with special-needs children - first module of trainings in Lithuania for volunteers from both regions about reasons that cause learning difficulties, ways to help special-needs children to reach bigger learning success, to integrate into the schools’ community better etc. - a short camp for volunteers and special-needs children to know each other, to feel comfortable in each other’s company - second trainings for volunteers’ teams in Turkey - team-building - trials of voluntary work at schools of regions, to find the inner system of voluntary educational support for special-needs pupils and to describe all process, actions, decisions and results, successes and fouls - preparations of intellectual product and multiplier events in both regions The main results: an implementation of voluntary educational support for children with special needs at schools, The recommendations for schools how to build and implement a system of a voluntary educational support of school community for children with special needs. The expected impact and potential longer term benefits: - on the participants and participating organizations: increase of a common responsibility for learning success of children with special needs, learning to work cooperatively in a team of teachers and educational help specialists, developed understanding of the value of variety among individuals, cultures, acquiring new knowledge about learning disabilities, special pedagogy methods, peer support in education, bigger awareness of importance of developing key social, civic, cultural competences, increase of self-confidence, leadership, communication skills, social awareness, better project coordination and communication skills, encouragement to participate in future international projects. - on the children with special needs: increase of self-confidence, self-esteem, greater satisfaction about learning process and all school community, better adaptation to the environment and a feeling of being better accepted by peers, better learning achievements.
