“Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds” was a seven-day long youth exchange that was hosted in Katalinpuszta, in Hungary, between 9-16 September 2015, gathering together 29 young people mostly with fewer opportunities who were facing geographical, financial obstacles. The aim of the project was to raise awareness of healthy lifestyle including physical activities and alternative way of thinking, and to support young people’s development of social skills using non-formal education tools (learning by doing, peer to peer, workshops etc). The project was designed to help create a greater understanding of the theory and practice of healthy lifestyle and to enable the participants to share that knowledge and understanding with those who would question its benefits and potential. Sedentary lifestyles, bad eating habits, unhealthy nutrition and lack of sport, remain one of the most salient problems in today Europe, in particular in Portugal, Poland, Hungary and Italy. The main objectives were: Promote cultural diversity, tolerance, mutual understanding Foster social inclusion by supporting youngsters to gain self-confidence, inner-peace Ensuring that participants have the capacity and opportunity to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge necessary to make life choices Improve future cooperation with young people’s involvement in the creation of healthier life Tackling problems such as eating disorders, bad eating habits Participant countries were Poland, Portugal, Italy and Hungary. Participants were above 18 years old, already being young adults but facing with many social, geographical and cultural obstacles. Young people really appreciated and benefited from the project, since some of them very rarely travel abroad. The biggest impact of the project was to share knowledge, get to know new cultures and habits. Nearly 50% of the participants have never been on a youth exchange before therefore it was a huge step in their lives to be part of an international project like this. The participants of this project were encouraged to get actively involved already from the preparation period and shape their own learning experience. The agenda included workshops, flash mob/street action preparation and interviewing locals about their healthy/habits and Hungarian culture. By using interactive and non-formal methods, the participants became highly involved in the project and were able to develop their own social skills and practical knowledge. Moreover, they were motivated to continue sharing the knowledge afterwards in their home country and within their own organization.
