Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is essential to the maintenance of dentists' knowledge & skills, underpinning safe clinical practice. However, there is no harmonisation on the 'essential' content or regulation of CPD for graduate dentists in the EU. CPD is provided by a variety of enterprises, including dental schools in higher education institutions (HEIs), as well as public sector organisations & industry. Not all are subject to quality management. This project will identify and agree 'essential' CPD requirements for all EU graduate dentists & provide guidelines for the management & delivery of high quality CPD by European dental schools in HEIs. As the principal providers of undergraduate training, there is a need to enhance their role in strategic management of CPD across the continuum to ensure 'fitness to practice'.Outputs:1. Inventory - existing CPD programs & providers; agreement on core components; identification of best practice. - By literature & internet search, survey & consensus methods.2. Guidelines for dental schools - organization, quality management & assurance of CPD programs. 3. Guidelines for delivery of competence-based CPD modules & a core topic, exemplar teaching module. 4. Dental CPD Reference Manual 5. Eur J of Dent Ed, Supplement, publicationOutputs 2 & 3 will be informed by Output 1, drafted by the Task group, locally tested & further developed/amended through workshops run at Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) meetings.This innovative project has a far reaching impact. Harmonization of dental CPD across Europe & modernisation of HEIs' strategic role in quality management of CPD will: enhance patient safety; promote cooperation between HEIs & professional organizations delivering CPD; promote freedom of movement of staff from European dental schools (in line with Bologna Directives) & graduate dentists through a Europe wide recognition of their CPD, central to the philosophy of lifelong learning.
