„Grenzenlos“ (No Limits) - an international Youth Camp to the themes of escape and homeland
32 culturally interested youngsters and young adults aged between 16 and 27 years from Estonia, Finland, Italy and Germany met from July 24 to August 1 2015 in the Youth Academy Segeberg (Germany). "Grenzenlos" (No Limits) was the subject of this international youth meeting. At first the participants exchanged and informed themselves on the terms "escape" and "homeland" with different methods of non-formal and informal learning. With implements of cultural education (theater and music), the youth developed a performance which they presented at the end of the Youth Camp to the public.
Youths and young adults have long been confronted with refugees in their daily lives. You go to school with them, do sports together or meet them in the cityscape. Prejudices still foment fear of contact and create distance. Many youths wish to have a deeper look into the refugee issue. They want to be engaged actively. In particular the international aspect of our project carried out, to exchange and interact with young people across Europe, broadened the horizon of their own point of view.
In creative workshops during the international youth exchange they could give a unique form to the contents, their ideas, thoughts, dreams, hopes and criticisms. The methods of music and theater play enabled the participants to get an emotional approach to the subject and thus deepened the work results.
The findings were incorporated into the development of a presentation that was shown to a wide audience at the end of the international meeting in the theater studio Youth Academy Segeberg and in the pedestrian zone in Neumünster.
The project sensitized the youngsters for the refugee problem, highlighted the European dimension of the issue, brought the participants from the different countries to talk with each other and motivated the young people to get involved in the matter on their own responsibility. With their very successful final presentation "A painful way" and the Song "HOME" succeeded the young people to touch the spectators emotionally. After the performances, the participants discussed about the topic with their audiences.
