Good Energies Alliance Ireland (GEAI) is an Irish Environmental NGO that works through research, advocacy, education and campaigning to influence public opinion and decision-makers in Ireland against on-shore unconventional hydrocarbon development (fracking) and towards practical policies on energy sources and uses that respect the environment, the planet and people. It is an accredited EVS hosting organisation and plans to host 3 volunteers in autumn 2014, from Spain, Romania and Ukraine. The participants are skilled in IT systems, one is qualified journalist, all are interested in the environment and sustainability. Non-formal and formal learning will be in evidence throughout the project, YouthPass will be achieved by all volunteers, who will use the YouthPass methodology to assess their progress and achievements during their EVS. Each volunteer will have a Mentor and work supervisors. They will work closely with the GEAI team, which is international, and the work environment is English-speaking.
The aims of the Good Energies project are: a) To support the GEAI campaign for prohibition of unconventional shale gas (fracking) in Ireland and, in the context of the global Climate Change crisis, to support the campaign for the implementation of local, national and global policies to develop a carbon neutral world by 2050. b) To support the local community and youth in their social and cultural awareness, development and activities.
OBJECTIVES
1. Organising and assisting campaigning activities, including:
? Using advocacy, influencing decision-makers nationally to raise awareness of fracking and issues around environmental and health impacts
. Campaigning for sustainable energy sources and uses in future Irish Energy Policies.
? Maintaining the GEAI website.
? Managing/assisting with organisation of events, e.g. conferences, public meetings, etc.
2. Working with other local groups, including Community Development group, Festival committee, Traditional Music Weekend committee, Active Age Group. Volunteers will get the opportunity to work with the committees and other workers, engaging with local people and participating in local cultural events.
3. Supporting youth activities organised/coordinated by GEAI, including:
. Organisation and achievement of future Erasmus+ project events, e.g. Youth Democracy or Action 3 meetings, seminars, etc.
? Liaising with local schools and colleges and promoting the aims of GEAI and Erasmus+ through arts, cultural events or other projects.
4. Supporting EVS volunteers to achieve their learning objectives and key competencies through non-formal learning methodologies, mentoring, work supervision and formal/informal training.
The results and impacts envisaged will be the enhancement of the campaign to tackle climate change, promote sustainable energy sources and uses, prevent the introduction of fracking to Ireland and influence decision-making on Energy policies regionally, nationally and Internationally. The campaign will gain more s young supporters who will actively engage with the project and participate in new projects.
The result for the volunteers will be improved competencies, personal and professional development, greater self-confidence and enhanced employability.
