PROJECT
FINISHED
The further sharpening of the European and international profile of Berufskolleg am Wasserturm forms the background to the GATE project. Even though there is already a group of teachers who are engaged in the European work it seems necessary to increase the number of the team members. The exisitng "European Spirit" is to be expanded and intensified among the teachers. With regard to content, the fields of IT/ digital learning and the educational integration of migrants and refugees form the background to the project. One of the project objectives is to offer concrete experiences of a European context to a number of 14 teachers in order to achieve authentic and personal commitment for the European work at Berufskolleg am Wasserturm. The profile of the participants differs. A first group of activities is addressed to teachers who have been teaching Europe related topics in their subject (e.g. politics) but who have not yet had the chance to experience Europe directly and authentically. A second group of activities is intended to strengthen the professionalism of teachers who have already taught English classes, even though they are not qualified teachers of English or colleagues who are willing to teach English, also even though they are not qualified as teachers of English. A third group of activities aims at supporting teachers who due to their position at school are in charge of sustaining and developing exisiting strucures and at educating new teachers in the fields of European project work respectively so that the number of members in the European team at school increases.Especially the first mentioned group is meant to be given the opportunity to gain authentic experience wwhen taking part in job shadowing activities and preparatory language courses. Contentwise the job shadowing will focus on It/ digital learning and the educational integration of migrants and refugees. The participants in this activity will deal with tasks related to these focuses. Before the activity is taking place we will discuss and create the tasks together with our partners in Ireland and Spain. The participants in this activity will do detailed research on the two topics by talking to experts and staff in charge. After the activity the participants will will evaluate their results together with other teachers from the school and together they will adjust and improve the concepts for IT/digital learning. Also, the participants will be able to make valuable contributions to the very new concept for the educational integration of migrants and refugees at our school. This will lead to a more stable and thought -through programme for migrants and refugees. The second mentioned group will develop their foreign language skills and also their knowledge about methodology in the foreign language classroom. This way the teachers taking part in this kind of activity will develop professionally and will become valuable members of the forein language department. Finally, a third group of teachers will be enabled to gain authentic experience by attending certain structured courses. Apart from relevant language skills, they will also gain knowledge that will help them to support and strengthen already exisiting European structures at our school. Further activities, that introduce participants to general aspects of European project work, will lead to an increase in members of the European team. Members of this team will feel more confident in their work and consequently the Europe related work is more likely to be long-lasting and sustainable. As the total number of participants is high and as the participants will come from different areas of the school we expect an expansion of the "European Spirit" at our school, that in the long run will lead to further project work and to an improvement of classes, programmes and concepts.
