As part of the training as a geriatric nurse our students need several internships, according to the Training and Examination Regulation. Goal of these missions is the broadening of the participants. They should consider the profession of a geriatric nurse from different perspectives and collect work experience in different fields, so that the socialization to become a specialist in geriatric care will encourage. The health system in Italy has some differences to ours. The division of nursing professions (the elderly, children and adult nursing) is unknown there. The majority of care done at the patients or residents is performed by one year-trained assistants. The "examined" nurses are qualified by studying at a university. In most other Northern and Western European countries the system is similar to that. In the Federal Republic of Germany, efforts are pointing in the same direction. By partnering with the elderly care facility "Sacro Cuore di Gesù" from Viareggio (Italy), we expect our students to gain a deep insight into a possible future of nursing in Germany and thus contributing to their professional political opinion. In addition, due to the proximity to our culture is the non-verbal communication - especially in contact with residents. The potential foreign interns are in their second or third year of training. They are therefore at the level of elderly care assistant or they have already completed the test for Nursery Assistant or Geriatric Nurse. This ensures that the foreign experience can be reflected appropriately. In the first year of training, the professional students will already be informed about our EU project and a discussion of details follows when needed. If they perform well in theory and practice there will be the opportunity to participate. Interested parties have to get possible internship hours from their employer and apply in writing to our project partner in Italy. Upon such commitment the pupils take part in preparatory measures (language course, cultural preparation, ...). During the preparation and implementation of the internship, participants will be accompanied and advised by Mr. Gurres. After completion of the internship abroad, the phase of project evaluation follows. Lessons learned are reflected in conversations, the project tasks and formal aspects (proof of services rendered, assessment forms, documentation of service hours, ...) will be reviewed and evaluated. An EU mobility pass will be distributed to participants in an official ceremony. With the implementation of accompanied internships the attractiveness of the elderly care training will increase at our school, thus making a valuable contribution to the development in our region. To engage the participants in and for Europe shouldn't be underestimated. Human encounters and longer lasting contacts are the essential tool in the fight against prejudice and xenophobia. The EU as an institution will appear in a more positive light to our students, as the research grant can be seen as a wise investment in the future of Europe.
