GEO Skills Plus

Many European countries are struggling with the challenges of linking geospatial vocational education and training (VET) to labour market needs. There is a growing demand in the EU labour market for an adequate number of well-trained VET students in fields of land surveying, mapping data collection, storage processing, delivering, and turning data into information. In order to tackle these issues, The Netherlands established the Geo Employment Market Foundation (SAGEO) in 2008. This foundation has had much success. SAGEO is a broad consortium of public & private GEO partners. They completed a market study in 2008 that revealed that professions using geo-spatial technologies had a rather "dull" image and were therefore not attracting enough students. The study also revealed that GEO-related course curricula should innovate towards embedding and using modern technologies and interfaces. - SAGEO launched a successful GO GEO campaign to promote GEO (VET) education and increase student enrolment (at all levels – vocational, bachelor, masters). - SAGEO convinced five Dutch universities to collaborate and write a basic geographic information course "GI Minor" (25 students 1st Semester September 2012, 31 students 2nd Semester September 2013). - SAGEO created GeoPlaza, a high tech web portal offering a platform the academic community including GEO students to meet with potential employers in order to find internships, starter jobs, invite as special guests and more. This project will combine the experiences in the Netherlands with experiences in other European countries including Belgium, Bulgaria, and Lithuania in order to define and tackle the mismatch between the GEO labour market and the GEO education community throughout Europe.
