"Gefilterte Wirklichkeit(en) - Wie prägen Medien unser Bild der Realität? Perspektiven junger Europäer"

The further development of digital media with a view to technical aspects and content open up a wide range of opportunities, but also pose a challenge to media professionals and the large public. Journalists are obliged to evaluate ever larger quantities of data. At the same time the public faces a growing flood of information. However, the media landscape undergoes a process of change not only in terms of the volume of information, but also of the form of reporting. Among other things an emotionalisation and polarisation of the media coverage (for example in the current "refugee crisis") can be observed. Pictures and shortened headlines are gaining in importance. How to find one's way in this information jungle? Which values are important for us in this context, and which conflicts can arise from this? What do the media actually show: a full picture or just an extract from reality? These are just a few questions which will be under discussion at the project "Filtered reality(ies) – how do media shape our perception of reality? Prospects of young Europeans". Project objectives: 1: promote the participants' media competence and critical thinking. 2. develop their capacity to understand also complex social themes, to form their own opinion on this basis and to articulate it (develop the competences to act, strengthen the capacity to participate in political life, increase the corporate competences). 3. develop intercultural competences and raise awareness of cultural differences. Promote the participants' interest in foreign languages, countries and cultures and increase their capacity to communicate in their mother tongue / foreign languages. 47 young adults from Germany, Poland and Ukraine as well as six accompanying persons will participate in the project. Whilst some participants have a difficult financial and social background on the one hand, young adults from the middle class will take part on the other hand. Furthermore some young adults from immigrant families will join the project. This mixed background and different points of view on the theme promise a fruitful exchange. As a first step, the young people will grow together to form a project group and be made aware of the requirements of working in an intercultural group. Intercultural competences are today one of the basic conditions to find one's way in everyday life, which is characterized by diversity and globalization. An easily accessible introduction will help the participants to familiarize themselves with the theme. They choose a medium, which they will use as an evaluation and documentation tool in the course of the project. A phase of knowledge acquisition and problem identification will follow. With the support of a media educator experienced in intercultural work, the young adults will deal with (common) values and associate them with the "new media" (Web 2.0). They will furthermore analyse the reporting of "classical" national and European media and the inherent obligations and challenges. A discussion with members of European institutions and media professionals will allow the participants to deepen the acquired knowledge. On the basis of this preliminary work, the young people will develop their own perspectives and recommendations for action with a view to the critical use of media and present them in media of their choice (film, radio…). The media educator will support them also in this phase. The participants will finally present their points of view and results at a discussion with a member of the European Parliament and two local journalists. Last but not least the results will be disseminated via regional media, the participants' social networks and in their regions of origin. The use of the online platform Eliamdey and the open character of the project will permit the participants to contribute to shaping the course and the themes of the project. The aspects elaborated in a project phase and considered as interesting will automatically be integrated into the next phase. In the course of the project, the participants' critical thinking will be fostered with a view to both the active media use and consumption. They will furthermore be enabled to form their own opinion, to articulate it, to develop options for action and, on this basis, to raise their voice in society – basic conditions of an active citizenship and of the participation in the European opinion-forming process. The young adults will make (in many cases their first) intercultural experiences and develop their (inter)cultural understanding. The partner organizations can enhance their skills as to project development and work in an international and European context and transmit the acquired knowledge in their organisations at home.
