The aim of the project was the foreign apprentice training of the future cooks and catering organizers from the vocational school with special stress on deepening the special language knowledge, getting acquainted with a foreign culture and learning new social competencies.
The trainees have been learning in our school first of all German, they have to pass an exam in this subject, that is, why we have chosen Germany as the target country of the project.
The project contained three stays in Germany. These periods were always 4 weeks long. The participants worked either as cooks or waiters. The number of participants was in each turn: 10 apprentices and one accompaning person, however two teachers changed tehemselves after two weeks. Due to our experience 4 weeks were long enough for our trainees to have a closer look at the world of the German gastronomy and the morals of work. It contributed significantly to the destruction of language barriers and to their future decisions about collecting experience abroad.
We have found contact to Győr's partner town, Erfurt and the local vocational secondary school of catering. The German partner school was happy about the request, too, because they also wanted to send students for vocational training to Győr. In this way both schools profitted from the co-operation. The chosen school, the Ernst-Benary-School has been our partner-school since 2009. The connection between the schools is friendly and intimate. We provided preparatory courses for the participants in the special language of catering, German history and geography, mental health and professional practice. They received really detailed information about the journey, the insurances, the accomodation, the places of the training, the free-time activities and the solution of unforeseen problems. We negotiated with our partner-school and with their help with the leaders of the training places. We tried to clear all details.
From the point of view of the catering trade we expected that the use of the latest technology, technical devices and the learning of modern professional knowledge will have a positive effect on the general knowledge and the preparation level of our students, furthermore it will help them to get an advantageous position in the labour market and it will raise the education level of our school, too. We highly recommended our apprentices, that they should collect relevant professional information and they should establish good contacts to their collegues, teachers and the staff of the training places.
We were planning a "Day of Open Doors", to which our school invites the representatives of the regional newspapers and the local TV- and radio-companies. We also gladly call the employers of our students and the representatives of other schools and the local government. Finally organised such a day three times. On this day the students and their teachers spoke about the project and they held an amazing cooking and serving performace in order to prove the development of their professional competencies. The so-called "German Day" became a school tradition. It gave the chance for our students to learn more about the project in form of presentations, exhibitions and personal accounts on experiences. It could have motivated other people for participation, too.
It is a relevant fact, that many of our students (because of the problematic family and material background) have never been abroad, and the realisation of our project gave them the chance to fulfill a dream.
