Garden of Friendship
Start date: Jul 1, 2016, End date: Nov 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The motivation for the project stems from the great and positive experiences we have made so far with international youth encounters. Moreover, the garden show of Baden-Württemberg is taking place in Öhringen in 2016. Other reasons for the realisation of the project are the current political developments in Germany and in Europe and our perception of international youth work as peace work. The Evangelisches Jugendwerk Öhringen cooperates locally with the Catholic Church, the Sportkreisjugend, a sports association of the district Hohenlohe, and the youth department of our district. As for the aims of our project, we would like to incite young people to perceive Europe and the entire world as a place they live in and which they can form and influence. Garden of Friendship responds to the longing of human beings to live in a safe, colourful and vivid environment. When young people from different countries come together, they will understand that peace can be achieved when everybody gets involved and makes a difference. The participants are from different European countries. They will meet in Germany, which - with regard to the current political situation - is in the spotlight when it comes to dealing with people from foreign countries. Thus, the camp can set a positive example for mutual respect and a peaceful coexistence. 60 young people from 11 countries and their leaders will come together and spend 10 days in Öhringen on the premises of the Catholic Church close to the area of the garden show. Participants will be between 16 and 25 years old and belong to different organisations, such as the YMCA, informal groups, church groups, etc. The following countries are involved in the project: Belarus, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal Slovakia and Ukraine. We have planned various activities: workshops, discussions, planting arbours, excursions, sporting activities, artistic projects, presentations by the participants, visits of the garden show… The project will take place as a youth camp, meaning that the young people will stay in tents and will play their part in the everyday camp life, e.g. by having special responsibilities and tasks. Already during the preparation phase of the camp, we will exchange intensively with all project partners in order to have them participate as much as possible. In the long term, we hope that the project will positively influence the international youth work of all participating structures and organisations. We not only aim to have a positive and long lasting effect on all participants but we would like to attract the attention of the public, of politicians and of the umbrella and parent organisations of the participating youth organisations. Living together in Europe in a peaceful and friendly manner - this is what the camp strives to set a wonderful example for.
