Galway Youth Circus Exchange 2016
Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Dec 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project "Galway Youth Circus Exchange 2016" will bring together 30 young people and 7 youth leaders from six European countries (Belgium, Finland, Czech Republic, Italy, Slovenia and Ireland). They will explore each other’s cultures and themes of immigration, social inclusion, European identity and healthy living and to collaborate on a creative venture using the medium of contemporary circus. The participants will spend seven days (12-18th of July 2016) in Galway City hosted by Galway Community Circus. They will be living, learning and working together under the supervision and support of experienced social circus youth leaders. The project will involve each participating country making a cultural presentation of their background as a means of learning about cultural diversity as a starting point to the project. All participants are youth circus members of member organisations of the Youth Circus Network Caravan. They all share an interest in circus arts and they will share and learn new circus skills from each other throughout the exchange. During the exchange they will create a new ensemble performance which will portray their shared and distinct cultural identity. Round-tables discussions will take place each day of the exchange and here there will be a focus on the youths’ identification as a European citizen. The participants will go on a number of cultural trips to learn about, and take part in, life in the local community. They will take trips into the Galway City where they will learn about the cultural diversity of the region and gain an insight into the cultural activities enjoyed by young people in Ireland. The final element of the project will be a coming together of participants to evaluate the impact of the project and to try and determine whether their understanding of each other’s cultures and their awareness of being a European citizen has deepened as a result of the project. The project will be documented and disseminated with the outcomes broadcasted via a number of means, both in print and online.
