From the Etna mountain to Sweden … Life and culture of young Europeans
Italy and Sweden cooperated in this language project. Its main objective was to improve the knowledge and mutual understanding of students and people from different European countries. The improvement of English as a vehicular language has been a major linguistic aim, but each school also provided for essential and relevant education in the partner’s language of at least 20 hours. Teachers of the partner schools organized language workshops for their partner classes in order to favor the acquisition of basic vocabulary and phrases in their mother tongue. The project, as stated by its title, was centered on the study of different aspects of the partner´s culture, and set national languages as an important part of communication and exchange. The final products - an itinerary, a ppt. presentation, a mini-dictionary - have been loaded on the website dedicated to the Project and linked to the schools´ websites to be presented to the general public. The itinerary shows the main sights, related to the culture, history, geography, social life of the students´ hometown and region. The students, who lived for 10 days in the partner country, experienced their partners' lifestyle and ways of learning specific and general subjects. This aspect was also observed by teachers in order to get aware of different curricula and teaching methods and possible convergences. Before the exchange the students got to know each other exchanging e-mail, photos, documents and participating in chat-rooms. This, together with the realization of the final products, has considerably improved the students’ skills in the use of ICT and their confidence when relating to a greater public, together with their knowledge of and motivation to the study of languages. Their ability in making decisions was remarkably increased, thanks to the constant need of autonomous planning of activities even in terms of self-evaluation of this project in all its phases.
