Park Road Sale Primary School is a single form entry school with a nursery class (3 - 11 age group) which converted to academy status in September 2013. We are an outstanding school with 260 pupils. Our school is not currently teaching French well and there is a further problem in that staff are moving year groups and changing before competency and enthusiasm for the subject has been established. Therefore we currently have problems with consistency. Language teaching will be compulsory from 2014 and we are committed to ensuring that the teaching and learning of this subject is improved. We want to improve the teaching and learning in French and the general enthusiasm for the subject with an emphasis on speaking and listening in order to better prepare our children for secondary education in MFL. We have included these changes into our school development plan and have already timetabled training and in school activities to begin this. The main driver in our vision for improvement will be the attendance of two of our staff on the French course in August for 8 days. Two teachers who are moving to upper KS2 in September will attend the course and then promote the language in school by revising the scheme of work and coaching other staff as well as improving their own confidence in teaching French. They are very motivated staff who are keen to participate and have a positive impact upon their own teaching. They will feedback and change how we currently teach French in school and improve confidence amongst the other teachers, through training, meetings and the development of new resources and French units of work.Over the longer term, we would like to establish a link with a French school so that children become more enthusiastic about learning French and understanding French culture. We will also use our VLE to support our curriculum and communicate about French to children, parents and Governors.
