Freedom and responsibility: Youth solutions to today's problems
Start date: Aug 15, 2015, End date: Mar 14, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project has begun when several groups of young people from different parts of Croatia and from Bruxelles have recognized the need for recovering the confidence among youth in democratic institutions and policy making process at all levels. Also, we have recognized the need to empower the youth for political participation, their bigger and better quality involvement in the process of Structured Dialogue and policy making, especially among young people who are not active in any civil or political organization or live in geographically dislocated areas. Moreover, the process of establishing the Youth Councils and the quality of their work should be improved. We are also recognizing that young people want to adress the problems they consider important, but don't have the means and possibilities to do so. Finally, we have recognized the need for empowering youth for active participation in the media, culture, civil society and economy, especially labour market. Having recognized the mentioned situation, „Freedom and Responsibility: Youth Solutions to Today's Problems“ was started. It is a youth project aimed at recovering the confidence among youth in the policy making process and the functioning of democratic institutions, acquainting young people with how the policy making process works at the local, regional, national and EU level and how can they be involved in it. Special attention will be given to introducing the participants to the concept of a Structured Dialogue, importance and ways of functioning of Youth Councils and National working group for Structured Dialogue. Through this project we want to empower, motivate and encourage youth for political participation, with the special consideration for young persons who are not active in any kind of civil or political organization, as well as those who live in geographically dislocated areas. Through the methods of informal, intercultural and peer learning we want to bring together youth and policy makers, academics and professionals in order to discuss the topics which the young people today consider relevant for them, and to share experiences and propose concrete solutions for the policy reform. All the proposed solutions for the policy reform will be gathered in the Declaration on Youth Policy Solutions which will be disseminated after the project and a strong and significant effort will be made in order to make sure that these proposals will be heard and implemented. Also, this project aims to empower, motivate and encourage young people giving them skills and competences for active participation in the media, culture, civil society and economy, and especially more quality participation in the labour market. „Freedom and Responsibility: Youth Solutions to Todays Problems“ will be a 7 days event organized together by World Youth Alliance Croatia and WYA Europe, gathering in Zagreb policy makers, academics, professionals and 45 participants aged 18 to 30 from Bruxelles, Zagreb, „Osječko-baranjska“ and „Splitsko-dalmatinska“ county. The main events hosted will be: interactive workshop: "How can youth get involved in structured dialogue in Croatia?", plenary session: "Freedom, education, democracy", interactive workshop: "How can youth influence policy making process on EU level?", debate: "Media and freedom of speech", "Model EU" simulations, debate and perfomance: "Art makes us free", interactive workshop: "Youth access to SRHR: Society of equal opportunities", plenary session: "The right over one's own body", interactive workshop: "Social entrepreneurship and youth access to labour market", Making of the Declaration on Youth Policy Solutions and a closing ceremony: "Freedom for excellence". Methods of informal, nonformal and intercultural learning, creativity and evidence based learning, and peer learning will be applied to the mentioned sessions. This project aims to have a positive impact on establishing and more quality functioning of Youth Councils in Croatia, bigger and more active involvement of youth in the Structured Dialogue, establishing the institution of a Youth Ombudsman and implementation of Civil education curricula in schools, in order to improve the overall position of youth in society and their communication with the policy makers.
