"FAMILY CAREER COMPASS - Efficient Career Guidance Approaches Supporting Parents in Guiding their Children’s Vocational Career”

EU constitutes a territory facing constant changes in labour market. Issues such as rapidly changing economic environment, the economic recession, the continuous technological breakthroughs, affect and influence the role of the family in raising children. According to Young & Friesen parents help children develop work values, self-awareness, self-confidence and interpersonal skills, grasp personal responsibility, exercise decision-making skills and through that mix identify the most appropriate work experience opportunities. Additionally, parents are the primary providers of encouragement for children to reach vocational goals and model their career-related behaviour and learning experiences (Turner&Lapan). The FAMICO project aims at developing career counsellors competences, while improving their skills in guiding parents to support children’s vocational decision-making process.Through this process, vocational counsellors will be able to foster personal development of students not only by facilitating the individual but with support of family system in its different developmental stages. Parents, who are one of the major factors of the student’s career decisions, will know better how to facilitate career management and have a deep awareness of age differences.
