Exploring democratic engagement; policy and practice in non formal citizenship education

This project will will create a pathway to influencing policy makers and politicians from local neighbourhoods to Europe.It will enable young people, through school councils and non formal group work, the opportunity to revisit or identify their priorities and interests, together with local politicians and policy makers, their peers from partner countries and academic experts. Lewisham and partner countries, have experience in this field and this project is an opportunity to respond to the changing demands of national and European priorities, and work towards a strategic plan which ensures and enables young peoples continuing influence on decision makers.Young people will meet politicians and leaders/mayors and with senior officers and partners who are responsible for developing and implementing policies to increase young peoples understanding of the processes, the negotiations, the restrictions, the difficulties and the opportunities which are part of creating change and being an active citizen. The national meeting and work will be followed by a transnational visit to Strasbourg for the partner countries to share experiences and develop a European response.This project will enable young people, through school councils and non formal group work, some who have been significantly involved and others who are new to the ideas, the opportunity to revisit or identify their priorities and interests, together with local politicians and policy makers. In light of the considerable work which has already taken place in the borough, and in response to the changing demands and National priorities this will enable a strategic plan to be created for the future.Lewisham young mayors advisors and in co-operation with Goldsmith College,(University of London),Professional Community Education department, Howard Williams University of Glamorgan Professor in European Youth policy a leading figure in in international participation will develop a 5 day international meeting aiming to bring together young people policy makers, practioners and descision makers to explore the experiences and responses of young people from the UK and there Portuguese and Swedish partners to discover how can young people affect youth policy at regional national and European Level. The seminar will contrast the experiences of young people from schools and youth democracy organisations in the UK, Portugal and Sweden with the objective of gathering responses and recomendations from the young people about these issues, and what recommendations can they put forward both national and within an EU context.
