The emergence of a new breed of Chinese global technology companies stirs up mixed feelings in the West. Regardless of the kind of feeling, all mirror the need to know and understand more about China’s technology rise. The assessment of the impacts of the Chinese scale up and the development of strategic cooperation in technology and innovation are increasingly higher on the agenda of the EU and its Member States. The objective of the proposed exchange programme is to pool the competences and on-going research efforts of EU and Chinese partners to carry out a comprehensive investigation to analyse the role and the interplay of the main factors that characterise technological innovation and related performance in Chinese enterprises. The final aim is to create the first nucleus of a unique EU-China network of scientists, universities and research centres with the mission of facilitating the joint development of research programs and fostering the bi-directional mobility of researchers between the EU and China. The exchanges comprise of the involvement of an experienced team of 29 researchers with business, engineering and neuroscience backgrounds coming from 2 EU Universities (Italy and Spain) and 4 Chinese Universities (Beijing and Guangzhou), for 116 months over the 2 and half-a-year duration of the programme. The consortium of researchers will investigate international technology transfer and intellectual property protection, absorptive capacity and technology innovation networks, human resource management, the creative cognitive processes of R&D workers, and how the interplay of these factors influences technological innovation in Chinese enterprises, as well as the associated impacts on EU policies and enterprises. Thus, the proposed partnership has the potential to provide EU stakeholders with rigorous, up-to-date and field-based knowledge. In doing so, the partnership will also contribute strengthen bi-lateral collaboration with China on technology.
