Hostelling International Norway/Norske Vandrerhjem is a non-profit organization focusing on cultural exchange and sustainability. The project "Sustainability and Hospitality in Hostels" connected sustainability issues with the busy life at an Oslo Hostel. In the project, two femals EVS volunteers from Spain and Slovakia got the chance to try out various sustainability initiatives such as making an urban garden, working with recycling, writing a travel blog and working with awareness amongst hostel guests, groups and the local environment around the Oslo Haraldsheim hostel. The volunteers got training in non-formal learning methods and worked with awareness raising activities throughout the 10-month long European Volontary Service. The target groups were hostel guest - in particular young people - and also the local population. Through the project, we now have a concept to be transferred to other non-profit hostels in our chain, thus giving people staying in or near a hostel a unique chance to both work with sustainability and learning about other cultures. The volunteers have in their evaluation said that the project proved exciting, varied and challenging, and that they learned a lot from travelling around Norway as well as meeting people from all over the world. We are already looking forward to our next EVS!
