Stiftelsen Grobunn is an ideal establishment that is based on the principles and philosophy of Anthroposophy, the work of educator Dr. Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). The volunteers join in the responsibility of being an example for, and an instructor for our mentally handicapped youngsters who range in age from 17 to 25 years old. We have up to 9 students, and up to 9 trainees who are finished with school, still live within our community, and have a more work related day. We support them in trying to manage with less support in their home/apartment. Our community offers both school and boarding for the school aged students. In addition to the 2 residential homes we have 2 houses and 2 apartments that we rent out to employees. We have employees who work here both during school time (teachers and assistants) and in the residential houses in the community (social workers and assistants) where the students live. The school’s curriculum is based on practical learning. That means varied activities in our ecological farm, the garden, wood workshop, home-making/housekeeping, and social training. We also see great meaning in celebrating the different festivals of the year and therefor music, painting and other creative classes for the students are important for bringing cultural activities into our community. The tasks are varied for anyone that joins us. Everything we do is based on and around the well-being and learning process of our students and trainees. Working on the farm and with the products produced on the farm, in the garden (vegetables, berries, flowers, herbs), the main school kitchen, our shop (selling ecological products, products from our farm and homemade products etc), and the wood workshop. In the students house the main work is to support the students in learning - personal hygiene, how to spend their free time constructively, make dinner, clean the house, take care of their clothes, and interact socially, feel safe and well. Because of the different realms/activities we can host 5 volunteers. The volunteers work in the school and in the students- and trainees- houses, and take part in all the work and social life at Stiftelsen Grobunn. The volunteers live together in an apartment in the Main house. They have their own sleeping rooms and share bathroom, kitchen and living room. The project starts always in the beginning of august an lasts 11 months. The values aquired through living and working in a community with different people are unmeasurable. Through use of youthpass as a tool the volunteers gain tremendously much: Personally, socially, practically and for their employability.
