We look upon “Mathilde” as a natural and appropriate place for an inter-cultural apprentice. The Hardanger “jakt”, like so many other sailing vessels, played a part in opening up the small villages societies of the past to the rest of the larger world. We would like to continue that tradition by offering a volunteer a place aboard “Mathilde”. The volun-teer will become a part of the crew and aid in the daily operation of the boat. The volunteer will experience, first hand, what it is like to live and work onboard a Hardanger “jakt”. He or she will, through hands on practice, gain the maritime knowledge of sailing, as well as the maintenance and running of a vessel. In 1884, “Mathilde” was built as a cargo vessel, but today she is used to market maritime culture. The volunteer will therefore also obtain experience in working with children and teenagers through our “camp” school trips. On our other tours, the volunteer will take part in spreading maritime knowledge to those we meet. The volunteer will also help the cook in preparing meals and keeping the boat clean. “Mathilde” has a permanent crew of 4 (skipper, best-man, cook, and “camp” school teacher/ able-bodied seaman). The volunteer will be a part of this team, and will experience that it is both challenging and rewarding to live and work as closely as one does aboard a boat. The volunteer will, during the tours that generally last 5 days, live and work aboard the boat. On land, the volunteer will have a studio apartment, and we will do our best to make sure that he/she will be integrated into our apprentice milieu and that of the town in general. We can also offer a volunteer position on land, either related to our maritime workshops or our youth program. In the workshops one would, through practice, learn traditional handcraft techniques and also get insight into how to convey this knowledge to the various groups who visit the center (school classes, daycare center children and others).
