Since 1957 the LSH is an officially recognised secondary school and boarding school in Hamm. School maintaining body is a registered association called "Landschulheim Schloss Heessen e.V.". About 1/3 of the 370 pupils find their home away from home at the boarding school. Accomodation is provided for groups of up to 15 students, who are housed in groups of the same age, boys and girls seperately from each other. The team of qualified social education workers and educators cultivate a faithful relationship with their students based on an humanistic education. Social skills are trained and the personality is strengthened by living together. The students can also enhance their musical, sports and creative skills in about 25 study groups and workshops, that are offered especially for the boarding school. In designing and organising these study groups and workshops the volunteers will find a main task. Depending on their interests the volunteers may also develop their own projects or provide ideas for these. In addition, they will accompany the students during their daily routine and be available if there are questions or problems. The meeting with European volunteers will open a vivid insight for the students and staff of Schloss Heessen into concepts such as cultural differences, intercultural learning and being different. The four volunteers from different countries will bring from their home knowledge, different languages, customs, and ways of life, which could enrich daily life at school / at boarding school and which can be an inducement to deal with these aspects of life. But also other events can be organized together, such as sports festivals , theater performances, literary events, Christmas parties. The volunteers, students and staff can give a new perspective on many issues by finding similarities and identify differences between one another. In short, the use of European volunteers will bring people closer together in and make Europe stand a little closer. An essential component of the EFD is the non formal learning. The volunteers have the opportunity to exchange cultural knowledge, to enhance their skills and learn new skills. Especially the independence and initiative of the participating volunteers will develop thoughout the duration of this project. The volunteers are closely involved in the team of the boarding school and thus take an active part in the organization. They are understood to be part of the team that supports each other and values each others skills. Schloss Heessen promotes international exchange and understanding of cultural differences, social conditions, traditions and perspectives. It allows volunteers with civic engagement to revive the idea of a European neighborhood, to develop sympathies and reflect on the idea of each other. It offers an opportunity to cross-regional mobility, work experience, personal development and the acquisition of key skills through informal education.
