EVS in NGO: Volunteer Development
Start date: Jan 1, 2015,
End date: Jan 1, 2016
PROJECT
FINISHED
The project is about hosting one EVS volunteer to AFS ISL office. The main purpose is to increase intercultural sensitivity and motivation for the volunteer but also for the entire AFS ISL network. AFS ISL thinks this is a win win project, by recruiting a volunteer to the office they hope to motivate local volunteers to seek the volunteer work in Europe as well as opening doors to new opportunities.
By volunteering at local level and working in the intercultural communication settings of AFS, the volunteer will develop knowledge, skills and attitudes on social, personal and professional level.
Throughout the project the volunteer will be given the opportunity to raise concerns, to involve own ideas further to the tasks set at the beginning. The active involvement of the volunteer in defining and shaping her/his tasks will be essential for avoiding job substitution.
The volunteer will get the opportunity to get involved in various projects and activities such as:
- AFS orientations, pre orientations, end of stay orientations, post participation orientations and cultural weekend. All have been explained above.
- Assistance with staff of daily office tasks as a volunteer.
- Assistance of preparation of marketing materials etc.
- Assistance of preparation of AFS events
- Special projects assigned by the manager.
The volunteer will have the opportunity to develop own initiatives preferably linked to the overall project. The AFS staff will encourage him/her to use this opportunity in order to gain in terms of self-confidence and to develop tools for setting up own initiatives. The volunteer will have the opportunity to develop intercultural competence and communication skills which is one of the core values of this programme.
Hosting a volunteer via EVS will also hopefully encourage other Icelandic youth to apply for EVS volunteering and open up doors of opportunities for Icelandic youth to learn about European Citizenship and what it stands for.
