Start date: Jan 1, 2016,
End date: May 31, 2017
PROJECT
FINISHED
Y Global and the YMCA Romanian Federation have been partnering in an exchange of young volunteers since 2013 with good results. The partners would like to build on this success by running further exchanges with the aim of improving the skills of young leaders and youth organisations, with a focus on empowerment for policy change. The main objectives of this project are:- to improve the skills and key competences of young leaders, to develop intercultural dialogue and to promote social inclusion through the learning mobility of those actively involved in youth work and youth organizations- to foster quality improvements in youth work through enhanced cooperation between youth organizations - to enhance the international dimension of youth activities and the role of youth workers and organizations as support structures complementary to the EU`s external actionIn particular, the project will seek to build the capacity of both Y Global and the YMCA Romanian Federation in the area of policy empowerment for young people with a focus on policies, at both national and European level, that will stop poverty. The project will recruit 2 Romanians (18-30 years) who will work with Y Global for 12 months each, one as an Exchange Officer, one as a Policy Officer. Volunteers should understand civil society, have very good communication skills and be motivated to learn new skills. Organisational experience and/or experience in youth work, campaigning or policy development would be very helpful, but it is not a must. The Exchange Officer will work with the Exchange Team on the Young Peace Performers (YPP) exchange programme and the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) exchange programme. Through working with YPP, the participant will learn how economic empowerment can contribute to poverty eradication and will learn how to use performance and the creative arts to mobilise young people to work for policy empowerment. Through working with the SRHR programme the participant will learn how the empowerment of girls and women contributes to eradicating poverty. The participant will also use his/her skills to help build the organisational capacity of Y Global to run and develop these programmes. The second participant will be a Policy Officer, working with the International Director to strengthen the development and communications work of the organisation in relation to policy and advocacy work, with young people as the target group. This will involve policies/advocacy directed at the Norwegian context, the European context and internationally as well as other tasks aimed at giving the participant a deeper undertsanding of how a development organisation works. These tasks will be achieved through preparation work and induction; through the volunteers being actively involved in staff meetings, training, (internal and external), social events, youth festivals, workshops; through close supervision from a designated line manager; through personal and professional reflection with a mentor; through learning by doing; through being given interesting, varied and suitably challenging tasks based on the volunteers profile and interest. The participants are expected to have gained increased knowledge, skills and intercultural understanding so that they are better equipped to work on policy empowerment for young people on their return to Romania (in a professional or voluntary capacity). The partner organisations are expected to have improved capacity to deliver policy empowerment for young people with a focus on policies that will stop poverty.
