Much of the cycling infrastructure on the 2,400km between Nantes and Budapest along the Loire, Rhine and Danube rivers already exists, but lacks continuity from one country to another. With a total of 18 partners from France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, the Nantes-Budapest project aims to standardize these cycling routes over a period of about four years. The objective is to make cycle routes crossing the NWE area, consistent both for tourists and local users. Led by the French Conseil Régional du Centre, the project will invest €12.6 million in implementing uniform safety measures (signposting and equipment), producing tourist information material, as well as creating local access to the sites by public transport and launching awareness-raising campaigns. Using the German example of “Bett & Bike”, a transnational accommodation network will be set up based on and using already existing national labels. Partners from outside the NWE area will also be involved in the routes. The final result will be transnational cycle routes that will improve the sustainable development of partner regions and promote further inter-regional co-operation.
