European ports coaching programme for sustainable development and implementation of environmental best practices. (ECONET2006)

ECONET aims to help ports apply proven environmental solutions by developing a process of coaching that will help ports implement schemes that have been tried and tested elsewhere in Europe. Creating a standardised approach to implementing best practices in European ports will result in cost-efficient solutions that help to overcome differences in local legislation that have an impact on the transfer of environmental solutions between ports of different countries. Achievements: Achievements so far The project professionalizes exchange of environmental solutions between port experts, (train the trainer project), to facilitate introduction of environmental solutions and to create a level playing field in ports (aim of EC policy). It started with 3 approaches: a kick off plenary working meeting, bilateral discussions to finetune specific requirements in different port regions, workshop on specific environmental issue bringing together all specialists involved in the logistic chain: EC / national regulation makers, companies involved, labour organization, health authority, environmental authority, all types of transport companies. Dissemination: a website under the portal of Ecoports, a network of ports and port companies, an international conference, meetings of European seaports Organization, newsletters. A standard national workshop is developed to exchange knowledge in national language, followed by international workshop to spread this knowledge, both now used in practice.
