The idea of European union was born out of a necessity: create a common space among states that had been fighting each other for hundreds of years and avoid future tragedy such as the World War II. Dealing with the past is a way to understand the present and create the future. This project addressed the needs to encourage young people to dive into the social economical history of Europe to learn about the past of their own and the participating countries and to discover similarities or common figures in the history of each country. The three countries participating in this Youth exchange, Germany, Poland and Greece have played a pivotal role during the Second World War and the lives of the Youth after the war went through a dramatic change.
In this framework, young people tried to define their common European background, to isolate singularity and specific national contest and create a map of knowledge regarding the past. They tried to compare the present situation in Europe for each country or region in order to discover the path that connect their reality with the past.
EPPE+ (European past in our present Europe) was an 8 days and 3 countries (Germany, Greece and Poland) youth exchange aiming at follow national “footprints” of the World War ΙΙ in Europe and its aftermath by targeting some significant events chosen by the youngsters in each participant country and outlining the cultural, social, economical and political background in which they’ve occurred.
27 people from the three partners countries (24 young participants and 3 teams’ leaders) participated in EPPE+ which took place in Larissa, Greece from the 3rd to 10th October 2015. The main characteristics of the participants were that they all had a personal interest in history and international affairs, they were high school or university students, they had at least a basic knowledge of English and some of the participants were characterized by fewer opportunity and social as well economic difficulties. All the activities and workshops that took place during the project were based on non-formal education.
